The Altar Guild has two purposes:

  • To care for the sanctuary of the church and to prepare it for each service
  • To be custodians of the Altar linens and the furnishings of the sanctuary

We belong to the Wisconsin Federation of Lutheran Altar Guilds. There is a meeting of this group once a year when we get together for fellowship, share ideas, and learn from one another. We prepare for each service by placing linens on the altar and readying the communion items for placement by the Elders.

We change the paraments according to the church festival or time of the church year. After the services each weekend we are responsible for clearing the altar, washing the communion ware, putting it away and laundering and ironing the linens.

There are two formal meetings per year, which consist of an opening devotion, brief topic and a business portion. There are no dues but we do have a free will offering that is used for purchasing anything needed by the Guild.

A Directress is appointed by the Pastor, to supervise the work of the Guild, including our duties on the weekends we serve. There is also a secretary, a treasurer and a flower chairwoman. One of our members washes all the Elders robes and another one does the needed mending. The flower chairwoman is in charge of the flower calendar and calls each person who has signed up for a particular weekend to find out the occasion of the gift. This information is then given to the church secretary for placement in the Bulletin. She also collects the payments for the weekly bouquets as well as the special plants for Easter and Christmas. Guild members decorate the altar area at Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. We also clean the church pews at least once each year.
